Many antique dealers who sell online have nothing more than a simple website. More sophisticated dealers have online search to their inventory. But what I have found and I highly recommend to any dealer with any for of inventory is to take advantage of Google Product Search. This is one of the best search engine optimization techniques any dealer can take advantage of. Best of all, use of the system is 100% free.
Its simple to set up and if you have a large database of inventory, you can even t…

I love anything to do with
antiques, especially antique furniture. Nothing is more exciting than browsing an antique store and finding an amazing antique.
One of my favorite dealers of
antique furniture is Newel. Newel is located in New York city and in my humble opinion, is one of the world's leader's in antique furniture. The inventory is of the highest quality and quite extensive.
If you happen to be in New York, I highly…

2005 was a very full year for my family and I with a number of family tragedies. One of them was the loss of my mother after a quick decline because of cancer.
I inherited all of my mother's items and knew that she had been collecting for years with my father traveling with his work (even though he was retired). I had no idea of the amount that she had collected until it all ended up at my home.
Spring of 2006 I was ready to get my home back and let go of some of mom's things. My brother said "l…

Recently we came across a bag lot of silver pieces we had brought back with us from the East Coast last fall. It had been purchased at auction last summer. As usual my husband began cleaning and identifying the various pieces. When he came to this piece his research came up with no…

In an effort to maintain a transparent organization, I will post "progress reports" to the group alerting you to the "goings on" of the steering committee. Note that we have decided to maintain a somewhat open membership for the steering committee so if you have an interest in participating (and yes, there is work involved), please contact me.
Currently, the steering committee is tackling a number of projects, most significantly is the development of a "stand alone" Web site (to reside at www.a…

Quite often we are asked how one goes about completing a set of
Antique Haviland Limoges China that they have received from a family member. They are very quick to provide the information that their pattern is the one with pink roses and gold trim. They do not realize that there are…

I've received a number of e-mails from
Antique, Vintage & Collectibles Online Sellers Association members on a variety of topics that are related to the professionalism of our group. As a "professional organization", it's important that each member act accordingly when posting or sharing information on "my pages" as well as extend common courtesies to other members during our mutual interactions.
Although I want to maintain a site that is reflective of o…

Just in case you don’t know, I wanted to share that AVCOSA has reached 100 members! I’m so gratified to know that there is a large group of online sellers who share our vision of responsible selling online in the antiques, vintage and collectibles product categories.
Although we’ve only been at this a couple of weeks, I hope that you are finding the value of AVCOSA. I know that many of us have been busy networking with others, sharing resources and information, and expressing our points-of-view…

When I was growing up, one thing I noticed about my unusual family in comparison to others was that almost all of our furniture and accessories had "Names". NO, REALLY! Everyone else I knew had "the couch in the family room" or "the chair in the hallway." Not us! We had, among others, the "Windsor Chairs," "the Queen Anne Tall Boy" and the "Kerr Sterling Vanity Set." If it wasn't named after someone, then it was referred to based on its construction..."The Walnut Pie Safe," the "Cherry Thread Ch…

I'm in the season of my life when childbirth is almost certainly out of the question and I've been advised that mood swings, night sweats and temporary insanity figure heavily in my near future. I can't remember a time when items of antique and vintage origin weren't an integral part of my existence.
I was raised by two wonderfully creative parents who also happened to be lifelong antiques collectors, dealers and appraisers. I remember my young life as a succession of antiques shows, auctions a…

Following is a blog post I wrote some time ago to educate about the differences between antique and vintage. The reason I am sharing it with the group is two-fold: 1) do you agree/disagree and why/why not? I'd like to see us develop this definition further to provide as a service to the general population and 2) I'd like to start a conversation about the differences in selling antiques versus vintage items. I understand there are differences so let's define and discuss.

Okay, to be honest, we're not official until I file the "official documentation" but we are well on our way! How fitting that we form AVCOSA (pronounced av-cosa) at the beginning of a new year! What for most is a time of reflection, for those of us in the "trenches" of online selling it's a time of researching, planning and ultimately, TAKING ACTION!
Since sales typically slow at this time of the year, it's the perfect opportunity to re-focus on your antiques, vintage and collectibles business…
